City of York Council has appointed a consortium led by Greenwich Leisure Ltd as the preferred bidder to deliver York's stadium and leisure complex.

Construction on the new community venue, complete with a leisure complex, is set to start in spring 2015 with a completion date of July 2016.

Work was originally planned to start this year, but the delay in construction was blamed on the discovery of great crested newts at the site and procurement problems.

The £37 million project will house an 8,000 all-seater sports stadium, in addition to a 25m, six-lan swinning pool, a new sports hall, a 100-station gym and three 3G five-a-side pitches.

Cllr James Alexander, leader of City of York Council, said: “The complex will provide a brand new home for York City Football Club and York City Knights RLFC with high-quality hospitality and conferencing facilities.”

On Monday 1st September between 3.00pm and 7.00pm, the York City is inviting supporters to come down to Bootham Crescent to view the initial proposals for the new Community Stadium.
