North Korean President Kim Jong-un has ordered a remodel of the May Day Stadium, which is the largest capacity sporting arena in the world.

The stadium, situated in North Korea's largest city, has plans to install new seating, artificial turf, advanced lighting facilities and rubber mats on the running track.

Kim described his actions as the latest effort to "spruce up" North Korea and give it "the appearance of a highly civilized nation.”

The president was reportedly shocked at witnessing weeds growing and broken paths during a recent visit, and the redevelopment would be the latest in a series of building projects that have been demanded.

The stadium currently holds 150,000 fans, which is 30,000 more than its closest rival, The Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, India
