Work on Brazil’s Sao Paulo stadium resumed yesterday, five days after an accident that caused the death of two workers.

Small numbers of stone masons, metal workers and others filtered into the Itaquerao Stadium after praying for the two dead, whilst the area where the accident occurred remained off limits with investigators on site.

The venue, also known as Arena Corinthians, is due to host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup on 12th June next summer.

Construction had already been running 45 days behind schedule before a crane collapsed onto a section of one of the stands last Wednesday.

It now looks increasingly unlikely that the construction will be complete by FIFA’s imposed deadline of 31st December 2013.
