An elevator mechanic working on the construction site of the 49ers stadium in Santa Clara was killed on Tuesday 11th June in an accident, police have said.

Authorities have said 63-year-old Donald White, a certified elevator mechanic employed by Schindler Elevator Corp., was found dead in an elevator shaft just before 7am.

Erika Monterroza, spokeswoman for Cal/OSHA, the state agency that investigates workplace deaths and injuries, determined in a preliminary investigation that White was standing on a ladder in the shaft when he was hit by an elevator counterweight.

Schindler said that it was "extremely saddened" of the death and that the company "is committed to the safety of its equipment, its workers and the riding public.”

Schindler also offered its sincere condolences to Mr White's family, friends and co-workers.
