Renovation work on Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium has begun, installing a new hybrid pitch.

A DESSO pitch system, combining grass turf with artificial fibres, will be laid as part of a major refurbishment to improve the playing surface’s quality.

The work is happening ahead of the 2014 Autumn Internationals against Australia, Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa. The 74,500-seater stadium is also hosting eight games in the 2015 Rugby Union World Cup.

Wales Rugby Union group chief executive Roger Lewis said: “This is a momentous day for the Welsh Rugby Union. This will revolutionise the playing field at the Millennium Stadium and transform that venue to a level that rivals any other in Europe.”

The multi-million pound investment also includes installing a ‘plug and play’ technology for broadcasters on all sides of the pitch.
