WORK BEGINS ON NEW SACRAMENTO KINGS ARENA

Construction work has begun on a new downtown arena for the Sacramento Kings basketball team.

The demolition of a dated shopping centre half a dozen blocks away from California’s state capitol marked the start of the $477 million project to build the National Basketball Assocation franchise’s new home.

The Kings are contributing $254m towards the build, with the remaining $233 funded by the council -  a finance deal approved back in May 2014

Team owners have vowed to have the 17,500-seater arena open buy October 2016.
