The ANZ Stadium in Sydney will undergo a $350million redevelopment that includes the addition of a retractable roof.

The venue - used for a range of events from soccer and rugby union to cricket and music concerts - will also have a dynamic entertainment zone that will see bars, cafes and restaurants inserted around the stadium.

The redevelopment will see the capacity of one of Australia's most prestigious arenas kept above 80,000, but a unique lighting system will also be installed to erase the appearance of empty seats in the higher tiers, with the intention of increasing atmosphere in events with a smaller attendance.

Owners of the facility are now looking to the government to contribute $250million towards the project, while they will supply $100million of their own money.

ANZ chief executive Daryl Kerry said the plan would give Sydney “one of the greatest sports and entertainment stadiums in the world”.
