The planned redevelopments to Plymouth's Home Park ground will boost the economy of the area, a local think tank claimed yesterday.

The work to the stadium, expected to cost £50 million, will include a new main stand, hotel, ice rink and cinema.

Conference Plymouth Chairman John Morcom said of the plans:  "We welcome the proposals and the contribution they would make towards strengthening Plymouth's offering as a conference destination."

However, many local residents are against the plans, with the development set to be built on parts of one of Plymouth's largest parks.

The stadium, currently with a capacity of 16,000, was last redeveloped in 2001.
