American football outfit St. Louis Rams could make their long-awaited return to Los Angeles as early as next year following new plans for a stadium in the city.

Rams owner Stan Kroenke has begun teaming up with owners of the Hollywood Park site to try and push through the construction of an 80,000-seater venue.

The NFL side have been based in St. Louis for over 20 years after they vacated their LA-based Anaheim Stadium in 1994, but are now thought to be on the brink of a return.

There have been many attempts by both the Rams and their NFL counterparts Oakland Raiders to complete a move to the state, where there is currently no side competing.

Terry Fancher, founder of the company that owns the desired land, said: "We are excited to unveil an expanded plan that will bring a world-class sports and entertainment district to Hollywood Park.

"We are committed to working with [the Kroenke Group] to build a project that will put Inglewood back on the map as home of the truly great sports and entertainment venues."
