Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero has stated his intention to build the biggest stadium in Europe to replace the Stadio Ferraris.

The Italian is in negotiations with the local council over the construction of the new venue, set to be built on the coastline of Genoa.

Sampdoria’s current home holds just under 38,000 people, while a capacity in excess of 100,000 would be required for Ferrero’s ambition to make the stadium the biggest in Europe.

Speaking on the potential of the project, President Ferrero said: “This project is a dream and we’ll see what happens,”

“The stadium will create jobs and tourism for the city. There will be other investors along with me, but we must take into account that this stadium will be good for the city and a location for the entire community to engage in sport.

“It must be active seven days a week and become the biggest stadium in Europe."
