ROVERS GIVEN GREEN LIGHT

The government has given plans to build a supermarket on Bristol Rovers' Memorial Ground the green light.

The League 2 Pirates need to sell the ground to fund a new stadium at the University of the West of England campus in Stoke Gifford and proposals for Sainsbury's to build a supermarket at their old stadium have been given the go-ahead.

Community secretary Eric Pickles has approved the planning application, which was backed by Bristol City Council in January.

A statement on the club's website said: “This is great news as we move one step closer to making a reality of our dream for a new stadium at the UWE Campus.”
