Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has expressed his desire to make the Santiago Bernabeu "the best stadium in the world."
Plans unveiled on Friday showed a £328 million revamp, which will include the construction of a new exterior and a retractable roof.
Perez said: "It's time to face another challenge, we want to make the Santaigo Bernabeu the best stadium in the world.
"Our commitment is to continue increasing the heritage of our club, thus gain economic strength, so we can continue to lead in an environment of increasing competition."
German architects GMP will lead the revamp alongisde international firm L-35 and Catalan-based Ribas & Ribas.
Reports suggest that improvements to the 85,454-seater stadium will start at the end of the 2013/14 season and take three years to complete.
