Japanese sports chiefs have approved the construction of a new 160 billion yen Olympic stadium for the 2020 Games.
The 80,000-seater venue will be built on the site of a 56-year-old National Stadium in the capital, Tokyo.
Costing around £950 million, the structure will be 70 metres in height, trimmed from the original 75 metres as part of cost-cutting measure with campaigners claiming the building is too big and too expensive.
The new arena is due to be completed in time for the rugby union World Cup in 2019, a tournament that Japan hosts one year before the Summer Olympics.
