JAPAN’S 2020 OLYMPIC STADIUM FACING CALLS TO BE SCRAPPED

Plans for the main stadium to be used in the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan are receiving calls to be axed.

The venue will be the showpiece of the Tokyo games, but fears over its cost, location and suitability have cast its future into doubt.

The initial budget for the stadium was around £1.8bn, but that has now been scaled back to less than £1bn.

The finished project will be twice the size of London's Olympic Stadium, and feature a huge retractable roof.

Famous Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki said: "It's just ridiculous, we are raising our voices, but they don't listen.

"My biggest objection is to cover the stadium. Technically it's more difficult and costly. This kind of system is not ideal for sports, all sports people would be against having a covered field."
