A new $975 million Viking Stadium has moved a step closer when Minnesota Sports Facility Authority [MSFA] selected a local firm to oversee the venue's construction.

Minnesota-based contractor Mortenson Construction has built more than 100 sports and entertainment venues and expects the new Minnesota Vikings stadium to be open for the 2016 football season.

MSFA, which will own and operate the new stadium, chose Mortenson based on the company's national sports construction experience, local connections and competitive pricing.

Lester Bagley, Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development said: "This was a competitive, fair process that brought forward some of the most qualified construction firms in the country.

"Ultimately, Mortenson's experience in building sports venues coupled with their familiarity with the market led to their selection."

The new venue will replace the Metrodome as the NFL franchise's new home once completed.
