Northampton Borough Council has unanimously approved plans to redevelop the East Stand of Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium.

The scheme will increase the capacity of the ground from 7,653 to 10,000 with work expected to be complete in time for the start of the 2014/15 season.

Ten corporate boxes, a directors’ box, 44 extra parking spaces, a conference room and a gym will also be included in the expansion.

All 12 members of the council’s planning committee backed the plans, which will be part-funded with a £12 million loan from the council.

Separate planning applications for a hotel, housing and retail facilities are expected to be submitted – in addition to improvements on the West Stand.

Cobblers chairman David Cardoza called it “a momentous day”.
