CAMBRIDGE UNITED CHAIRMAN BEMOANS STADIUM PLANS

Cambridge United chairman Dave Doggett believes the Abbey Stadium is no longer fit for purpose.

The U's are hoping to push through plans for a new stadium after seeing increased attendances this season after their return to The Football League.

The club have two potential options which include either a move to a new stadium or a redevelopment of their current home.

The Abbey Stadium is owned by developer Grosvenor, who wish to construct a community sports venue for the U's to move into - a proposal that has been rejected by Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire councils.

Doggett said: "We must have a modern stadium. We've already had 6,500 people in - how can we cope with that number of people?

"We need a stadium fit for purpose to generate extra funds and not just rely on gate receipts."
