CAMBRIDGE UNITED AXE NEW STADIUM PLANS

Cambridge United have scrapped their plans for a proposed new ground, and will instead remain at the Abbey Stadium.

The club were hopeful of a move to new venue in the Trumpington area, but have now shelved the idea which also failed to receive backing from the local council in 2013.

The U's current home will now be redeveloped instead, and will see a number of community benefits such as education, health and recreation facilities included upon its completion.

Ed Skeates, director of development for Grosvenor, who own the Abbey Stadium, said: "The proposals we are confirming today can provide Cambridge with a variety of widely accessible, inspirational sports facilities and secure the future of CUFC as the city's leading professional sports club."
