Brentford have submitted a planning application to Hounslow Council for a new stadium at Lionel Road.

The Bees bought the seven-acre site, which lies by the M4, last year and want permission to build a 20,000-seater stadium.

Plans submitted by the League 1 club also include building up to 910 residential apartments.

Brentford, who have played at their current home – Griffin Park – since 1904,  first identified the Lionel Road site in 2002 and hope to move into a new venue there for the start of the 2016/17 season.

“It is clear that the club cannot prosper in the obsolete facilities at Griffin Park,” outgoing chairman Greg Dyke said.

“In the past few months we have twice sold-out to capacity crowds of over 12,000 and came within a whisker, with a penalty kick and then a Play-Off Final, of promotion to the Championship.”
