COSTA RICA NATIONAL STADIUM OPENS

Costa Rica has unveiled a brand new 35,000-seater national stadium in San Jose with a showcase International football match.

The game between Costa Rica and China ended in a 2-2 draw but it is clear that the impressive stadium will be a massive winner for supporters. The match was part of the weeklong celebration that includes concerts, boxing and dancing.

Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica was financed by the Chinese government as part of its global construction scheme. Construction began on 12 March 2009 and is rumoured to have cost $105 million.

Costa Rica president Laura Chinchilla paid tribute to her predecessor in a glowing "Don Oscar, Costa Rica will never forget your visionary rudder. This giant and beautiful space we are inaugurating today will always be living proof of that."

Costa Rica will next play Argentina in a friendly match on Tuesday with a Shakira concert to end proceedings in a week’s time.
