Real Madrid has begun replacing the playing surface at their famous stadium after outspoken criticism by manager Jose Mourinho.

Work at the Santiago Bernabeu commenced on Wednesday following comments from Mourinho comparing the playing surface as a "potato field."

Groundsmen started tearing up the grass straight after Madrid beat Espanyol to have it ready in time for their next home match against Deportivo La Coruna on 3 October.

A club spokesman said the pitch, which had patches of dry blotches, had been affected by three different types of fungus.

The new surface has arrived from Slovakia and will take 30 hours to install.
