Athletico Madrid have revealed plans to move away from their current Vicente Calderon home as soon as 2015.
The Spanish La Liga side are looking to create a 70,000-capacity venue which could possibly host major national and continental sporting events as well as entertainment events. The new stadium would become the ground with the third highest capacity, behind Barcalona's Camp Nou (99,354) and Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu (80,000).
Atletico president Enrique Cerezo told the club's website: “Today is an important day, I would say that it is one of the most important days in the history of this club. There are not many times one has the opportunity to live a historical moment as relevant, in the life of a sports club, as this.”
